Common Pool Chemistry Mistakes
Avoid these mistakes and use our calculators for correct dosing.
Adding too much chlorine
Overdosing causes skin and eye irritation, strong smell, and bleached swimwear. Always test first and add only what’s needed to reach 1–3 ppm. Use our Pool Chlorine Calculator for your pool size and current level.
Ignoring alkalinity
Alkalinity buffers pH. If it’s too low, pH will swing every time you add acid or base. If it’s too high, pH is hard to lower. Test alkalinity weekly and keep it 80–120 ppm. Use our Pool Alkalinity Calculator. Balance alkalinity before making big pH changes.
Incorrect pH adjustment
Adding too much pH increaser or reducer at once can overshoot and waste product. Add in smaller amounts, wait 30 minutes with the pump on, then re-test. Use our Pool pH Calculator for the right amount. Target 7.2–7.6.
Not testing regularly
Test chlorine and pH at least 2–3 times per week. Catch problems early. Use our Pool Chemical Levels Chart for target ranges.
