Pool Pump Sizing Guide

v2026.07

Pool pump sizing starts with pool volume and target turnover time. This guide shows required GPM for common pool sizes.

The correct pump flow rate (GPM) equals pool volume divided by target turnover time in minutes.

HorsepowerApproximate GPM (at typical system head)Suitable For
0.5 HP25–35Hot tubs, above-ground pools up to 8,000 gal
0.75 HP35–45In-ground pools up to 12,000 gal
1.0 HP45–55In-ground pools up to 16,000 gal
1.5 HP55–70In-ground pools up to 20,000 gal
2.0 HP65–85Larger in-ground pools 20,000–30,000 gal

Notes

  • Always verify actual GPM at your system head pressure — pump ratings are at zero head.
  • Variable speed pumps should be selected for the highest required flow, then programmed at lower speeds for routine filtration.
