Skimmer
A wall-mounted intake that removes floating debris from the pool surface before it sinks.
Definition
Pool skimmers are built into the pool wall at the water line. They use a weir (floating flap) to create a surface current that draws floating leaves, insects, sunscreen, and debris into a basket before the debris sinks to the pool floor. Most residential pools have one to three skimmers depending on size. The skimmer basket should be checked and emptied regularly — a clogged basket restricts pump flow. Never add granular shock directly to the skimmer; it can damage equipment. Skimmers also contain a suction port used during pool vacuuming.
