Definition
Scaling is the precipitation of calcium carbonate and other minerals onto pool surfaces, tile lines, plumbing, and equipment. It is caused by over-saturated water (positive LSI), which occurs when pH, calcium hardness, alkalinity, or temperature is too high. Scale deposits are hard and difficult to remove — prevention is far easier than remediation. Treatment requires lowering the LSI by adjusting pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness. Existing scale can be removed with acid washing or mechanical removal, but this should be done by a professional to avoid surface damage.
