Definition
Ozone (O₃) is a powerful oxidizing agent generated on-site by UV lamps or corona discharge generators and injected into pool return water. It rapidly destroys organic compounds, chloramines, and pathogens. Because ozone dissipates quickly (it does not accumulate in pool water), it must always be used alongside a residual sanitizer — typically free chlorine at reduced levels. Ozone does not replace chlorine; it reduces the chlorine demand and helps maintain water clarity and quality with less total chemical use.
