Definition
Oxidation is the chemical reaction that destroys organic matter, combined chlorine (chloramines), swimmer waste, and other contaminants in pool water. While free chlorine both sanitizes (kills pathogens) and oxidizes (destroys organic matter), pools with high bather loads may have more oxidation demand than chlorine sanitization demand. Non-chlorine oxidizers (potassium monopersulfate, hydrogen peroxide) can handle the oxidation load while preserving free chlorine for sanitization. Regular oxidation keeps combined chlorine low, prevents chlorine odor, and maintains water clarity.
