Never add multiple chemicals simultaneously and never assume a chemical has fully dispersed without waiting for the recommended time and running the pump.
Wait Times After Chemical Addition
| Chemical | Wait Before Retesting | Wait Before Swimming | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid chlorine | 30 min | 15 min (if FC <5 ppm) | Run pump during wait |
| Granular shock (cal-hypo) | 2 hours | Until FC < 5 ppm | Pre-dissolve before adding |
| Muriatic acid (pH down) | 30–60 min | 30 min | Add near return jets |
| Soda ash (pH up) | 2–4 hours | 30 min | Pre-dissolve; may cause cloudiness |
| Sodium bicarbonate (TA up) | 4–6 hours | 30 min | Allow full dissolution |
| Calcium chloride (hardness up) | 4–6 hours | 2 hours | Heat reaction — dilute first |
| CYA stabilizer | 24–48 hours | 30 min | Dissolves slowly |
| Pool salt | 24 hours | 30 min | Allow full dispersion |
| Clarifier | 2–4 hours | 15 min | Run filter during wait |
| Algaecide | 30 min | 15 min | Follow label directions |
Notes
- Always run the pump during the wait period to ensure even distribution.
- Re-entry after shock is safe when FC tests below 5 ppm — not based on time alone.
- Never add two chemicals to the pool simultaneously.
