Eye Irritation
Swimmer eye irritation caused by chloramines or pH imbalance.
Definition
Eye irritation from pool water is most commonly caused by chloramines (combined chlorine) or pH outside the 7.2–7.8 range. Human tears have a pH of approximately 7.4 — water at the same pH is least irritating to eyes. At lower pH, the water is acidic and irritating; at higher pH, chlorine effectiveness drops and chloramines accumulate. The fix for chloramine-induced eye irritation is breakpoint chlorination. The fix for pH-related eye irritation is adjusting pH to 7.2–7.6.
