Definition
Algae are plant-like microorganisms that grow in pool water when free chlorine drops below effective levels. Green algae is the most common and easiest to treat. Mustard (yellow) algae is more resistant and requires more aggressive treatment. Black algae develops deep root structures that penetrate pool surfaces, making it the most difficult to eradicate. Algae growth is fueled by nutrients (especially phosphates), warm water, sunlight, and insufficient chlorine. Prevention requires maintaining adequate free chlorine relative to CYA level at all times.
