Saltwater Pool vs Chlorine Pool
Saltwater pools still use chlorine—generated from salt by a salt cell. Here’s how they compare to traditional chlorine pools.
Maintenance
- Saltwater: Check salt level, pH, and alkalinity; clean the salt cell periodically. Less frequent chlorine adding.
- Chlorine: Add chlorine (liquid, tablets, or shock) regularly; test and adjust pH and alkalinity. Use our Pool Chlorine Calculator.
Cost
Salt systems have higher upfront cost (cell and plumbing). Over time, you buy less chlorine but pay for electricity and occasional cell replacement. Traditional pools have lower upfront cost and ongoing chlorine and testing. Exact cost depends on pool size and local prices.
Chemistry
Both need balanced pH (7.2–7.6) and alkalinity (80–120 ppm). Saltwater pools need salt in range (e.g. 2,700–3,400 ppm)—use our Saltwater Pool Salt Calculator. Traditional pools need 1–3 ppm free chlorine. Saltwater can feel softer; chlorine levels are still present from the generator.
Which to choose?
Saltwater suits many owners who want less hands-on chlorine handling. Traditional chlorine is simpler to install and our calculators support both: chlorine, salt, and chemical chart.
